A late night silly idea …

I just had a half formed silly idea whilst I was in the bath that might give the frozen memory thing a bit more of a narrative - although its also a little bit dark so I’m not sure if its going the right way but anyway…

the story is there are a couple of kids in a sort of sinister city who start noticing that all the old people around them are losing their memories - a bit like how in the Lost Boys you gradually realise there is something odd going on and all the children are missing. For example every morning the kids have a playful conversation with Mrs Jones who is always trimming her hedge when they are on their way to school. But suddenly one day Mrs Jones doesn’t recognise them and can’t even seem to remember her own name (remember the old lady in Donnie Darko who keeps checking her mailbox - its a bit like that).  Maybe there are some other older characters in the kids lives who are also losing their memories. The kids’ parents are unconcerned and tell them its just what happens when people get old - but the kids are convinced there is something more to it than this.

Then the kids notice one day that there is something odd about the hairdressers shop where all the old ladies go to get their hair cut. They peer through the window and see a row of old biddies with these strange machines clamped onto their heads (old fashioned hair dryer things).  When the ladies come out of the hairdressers they have curly blue rinses and seem distant and confused. Their conversation is entirely made up of parroted repetitions of the housewives magasine articles they were reading whilst their curlers set.

Obviously these machines are stealing the old ladies’ memories. The memories are being sucked out of their heads for some evil nefarious purpose.

The kids spy on the hairdresser and discover he has an equally sinister brother, an ice cream van driver. His ice creams seem to be incredibly popular. It tastes so good that people become incredibly nostalgic and emotional when they taste it. There is an enormous queue of people desperate to try his ice cream - as soon as anyone takes their first lick they either burst into tears or start laughing hysterically. the ice cream is the talk of the town. But only the kids realise that the secret ingredient of the magic ice-cream is nothing less that the memories of the older generations - and the ice cream man’s thriving business is making all the old people in the town prematurely senile.

The kids then have to save the old people by releasing their memories from the ice cream van..

or something..
