Sam and Bronia’s notes for the Frozen Memory...
Introduction
We would like to present our project, ‘The Frozen Memory project’ is our working title. We have initially developed it as an interactive theatre piece, however, the feedback that we have received whilst developing the idea has encouraged us to pursue the development of the concept out onto other platorms too. So we would like to give a brief presentation of our project , and then we’d...

On nostalgia
“Nostalgia dulls reality[…].Nostalgia can be a tool of authoritarian centralism which maintains the old order and demonises the dissenting underbelly”
- John Fox, founder of Welfare State International
ambient thougts
(This all relates to van experience - not the book!)
was just playing back the rough food memories edit we made a couple of weeks ago whilst there was also some ambient music by Matmos playing on my computer - I really liked the effect of the voices with the music - making me think I will try and do a re-edit with some music and sound effects added.
This reminded me of Chris Morris’...
Short plot synopsis for children's book
Matt Buckle visits his grandfather Mori everyday after school. Mori, an ex-inventor/scientist has fallen on hard times and struggles to sustain himself through an ice-cream van business. Although he does his best to hide his concerns from Matt, Mori is very worried that he is on the verge of losing his livelihood, his home and perhaps also his memory.
One day Matt accidentally discovers that Mori...
Text Sample for The Frozen Memory story - bronia
For this text sample, I imagined the book being formatted as a heavily illustrated book for ages 7-11. (Taking Marcia Williams’ work as a model, particularly Archie’s War).
I like the idea of the illustrations being a blended collage/montage with layers of text, illustration, photos, pull out flaps with handwritten letters and extra ephemera. I also envisaged that in some of the illustrations...
notes from our email conversation re Russia /...
● Sam: Also just doing some research on emigration of Russian scientists - apparently there was a big exodus of scientists in 1922-3 and lots of individuals leaving into the 1930s so I think are back story should hold up quite well!
● Just reading wikipedia page on cryonics now (apparently its cryonics not cryrogenics as I thought before) quite fascinating stuff -
● Bronia :wow, this is great,...

A plot overview (work in progress)
Matt Buckle, a 12 year old amateur inventor who is endowed with boundless enthusiasm and an unquenchable curiosity, has a deep affection for his grandfather, Mori Lahovsky, who he visits every day on his way home from school.Mori, a lovable eccentric who Matt idolizes, emigrated to the UK in the 1930s, as this was a difficult time for scientists in his native...

Just under the wire - and i’m late for work…..
I’m imagining lots of illustrations - pretty much every time i leave a gap there’d be one.
Also a photo album/diary insert from mori (or mani) from his time back in russia.

Sam's first attempt at writing childrens book...
“But purrleaase Auntie, purrlease…” It was a familiar scene that played itself out pretty much every Thursday afternoon when Aunt Maude came over to the Buckle’s house to babysit- a word that Tim despised. After all he was no baby, he was nearly ten years old, and that was quite old enough to look after himself. He didn’t see any need for busybody relatives to interfere in his affairs....

Criteria for UK Media Desk funding
In order to apply for media desk funding, we would probably need to apply through a company who can fullfill the following criteria:

The companies must demonstrate a track record of having produced as majority...
THE BEACHES OF AGNES (Agnes Varda, France, 2008)
‘If you opened people up, you would find landscapes; if you opened me up, you would find beaches. Many old people wish to tell their life. As an old filmmaker, with the enthusiasm and energy of my youth, I tried to find a style and a form to tell my memories, my encounters, the ups and downs of my life. I shot my film as a kaleidoscope, a collage, a fantasy.’- Agnès Varda
I saw this film on...

Alan Lomax :travelling folk song recorder →
random thing I just was reading about a guy who used to travel around collecting folk songs - apparently he recorded ‘House of the rising sun’ by taking his ‘recording equipment’ to some random singer’s house - otherwise it might have been lost.. Is there between collecting songs and collecting memories/stories?

A quote from the Science Museum website
Laying down new memories
A part of your brain called the hippocampus is vital for forming newmemories. Scientists think that the experiences making up a memory are sent from the senses to the cortex, then on to areas surrounding the hippocampus. These ‘bind’ the memory together, before it is sent to the hippocampus itself, where information about context or location is added.
A late night silly idea ...
I just had a half formed silly idea whilst I was in the bath that might give the frozen memory thing a bit more of a narrative - although its also a little bit dark so I’m not sure if its going the right way but anyway…
the story is there are a couple of kids in a sort of sinister city who start noticing that all the old people around them are losing their memories - a bit like how...

The Frozen Memory Project (working title).
Sam Woolf and Bronia Evers
This is a project about two very valuable things: memory, and childhood. It is about communicating to children living now the childhood experiences of older generations who may have grown up in very different circumstances.
The entire premise of our project is based around a very simple metaphor; the idea that memories could...
